As well as learning the Pledge of Allegiance and saying it every day at school, Dylan came home yesterday telling me how 'a long time ago before you were born, Mummy, England were bad guys and they had a war with America, and they tried to capture the flag, but America won, and now England are our friends'.
I told him to tell the teacher they deserved it.

Can you get him to ask about the time 'when Canada came down and beat America?' I suspect that bit (the war of 1812) won't get mentioned...

Was with parisian niece and nephew (who go to American school in Paris) in car a while back and they asked what "all those things were" pointing to one of the many war memorials in suffolk.
ME: They are to commemorate the english who had died in the second world war.NEPHEW: Was England in the war?
[long pause, adults look at each other]
ME: erm, well yes, very much so
NEPHEW: But America won the war against the Germans. Who's side were the English on?
[embarassed silence in car amongst adults, adults avoid each other's eye]
ME: Well, actually the English fought the Germans pretty much alone for a long time while the german airforce and V2 bombs tried to bomb the hell out of London. The Americans came in at time the Russians had bled the German Army to death on the eastern front. If anyone caused the end of the war it was the 6 million russians that died pushing back the german army.
[embarassed silence in car amongst adults]
Once upon a time America was full of criminals who decided that they didn't want to obey the laws of the land and so got weapons and attacked the forces of law and order.
Because these forces were only small and had to come such a long way to punish the criminals the criminals won, and decided that they would make their own laws, steal money from people that lived on the land and call it taxes and pretend to be a country themselves.

a.) 1812 war had no Canadians. Only colonialists and native Indidans.
b.) Allies beat the Germans. Which happened to include the U.S.
c.) Criminals were the cokonialist invaders who either coerced or murdered the native people of the continent to justify their own brainwashed belief of their superiority. Said criminals then turned on their own to showcase these beliefs.
Nationalists go to war to show their superiority only to have history show them as inept.
