I'm confused with this bloody dairy.
If I give her undiluted dairy (milk / formula), she gets diarrhea.
If I give her processed dairy (cheese, yogurt), she gets constipated.
I know I need to not give her dairy really, I'm just hoping her tolerance is being increased with age (it's not) but it's all very confusing, why does it have such polar opposite effects?
Posted by katie at November 13, 2008 11:18 AMSeriously, I would suggest leaving it completely and not worrying about it.
With many childhood intolerances, they say don't try giving it to them for 2 years.
If you do want to try yogurt, try live goats or sheeps yogurt only, and don't muddy the waters by putting anything cow dairy nearby. I know that the same allergens are present, but they do have different effects in the body.
Although soya based formula could be *extremely* bad for boys, because of the oestrogen-like effect of soya in the body, it might not be so bad for girls.
James has hist first allergies clinic appointment with the hospital later this month. At bloody last! I'm almost certain he's allergic to tomatoes, he definitely can't do cow dairy and kiwi fruit - and there's a bunch of other stuff that we have no idea about - he just flashes up in hives all of a sudden for reasons we can't fathom.
Ayeeesh.
Posted by: Cait at November 14, 2008 07:01 AMIn an adult, I'd say lactose intolerance was a possibility; the bacteria and/or enzymes involved in turning milk into either yogurt or cheese typically eat up at least some of the lactose. But the normal way of things is for lactose intolerance to develop only some number of years after a child is weaned so I wouldn't think that would be the case in a child that young. (But of course, I'm not a doctor, nor do I even play one on TV.)
Posted by: Steve at November 14, 2008 02:21 PMSteve, the visualisation of you trying to play a doctor on TV, who specialises in solving crimes by his unerring knowledge of food allergies and intolerences is quite bizarre, and disturbing ;-)
I think even Dick Van Dyke would need to draw the line at that one!
